Guria Mineral Resources Group (GMRG) operates the Askana–Mtispiri bentonite deposit in Ozurgeti municipality, Guria, western Georgia, supplying customers with high-quality natural bentonite from local production.

The Askana–Mtispiri deposit

The deposit sits in the Guria region of western Georgia, in Ozurgeti municipality, close to the Black Sea coast and within efficient distance of Poti and Batumi ports. It is one of the most significant bentonite deposits in Georgia, characterized by high montmorillonite content and low iron oxide levels — properties particularly valued by foundry and cat litter producers. Reserves are indicative; full third-party resource assessment is a roadmap item.

Production history

Industrial mining and processing of bentonite at the Askana–Mtispiri site began in 1946, continued through the Soviet era and independence, and continues today. GMRG is the current operator, working to bring production and quality documentation to international export standards.

Production volume and export figures are indicative and are confirmed against customer requirements on a per-order basis. Export packaging includes 25 kg, 500 kg, and 1 t bags; bulk shipment options available. Contact us for current availability.

Our history

  1. 1913

    The first bentonite deposits are discovered in Georgia.

  2. 1946

    Industrial extraction begins at the Askana–Mtispiri deposit.

  3. 1950–1960

    Expansion of the plant and development of production infrastructure.

  4. 1960–1980

    The peak period of production.

  5. 1980–1990

    Supply of product to industrial enterprises across the Soviet Union.

  6. 1991–1995

    Operations at the plant are suspended.

  7. Since 2010

    Phased recovery of the deposit's resources and a new stage of modern development.
